Don’t Forget Your Heating System This Summer!
Posted: June 22, 2020
Taking care of your heating system is probably not top of mind for most people as we begin summer 2020 – but the way things are going right now, it’s probably a good idea to stay one step ahead of any potential problem.
A Few Summer HVAC Chores
If you want to make sure your heating equipment is ready to rock and roll heading into fall, try tackling these three tasks in the coming weeks:
Check your HVAC air filters – Air filters should be checked monthly throughout the year, including during the summer months (especially if your furnace and A/C share a common filter). If you have washable filters, give them a good cleaning; if you have disposable ones, replace them. Clogged air filters rob your system of efficiency and, if left untreated, could eventually cause a heating system breakdown. They don’t help your indoor air quality, either.
Test your thermostat – Do you know if your thermostat gives accurate readings? If it doesn’t, you could be spending more to heat and cool your home than you need to. Summer is the perfect time to have your thermostat tested by a professional (if you have a zoned heating system that uses multiple thermostats, test each one separately). Better to take care of the problem now than in the fall or winter, when you’re paying for every gallon of propane or heating oil that you waste.
Clean and check your condenser – Early summer is a good time to give your outdoor condenser unit some attention. Check the lines leading to and from the unit for any obvious damage; if you find some, contact us for service. Then give your condenser a good cleaning – just be sure to turn off power at the breaker before you begin. Remove any large debris that may have accumulated during the offseason, then clean the condenser with mild detergent and a hose.
When it comes to keeping your heating system clean and running at its best, maintenance is key…stay on top of routine heating service, even during the warm weather months!
